Let me ask you a question!
When you listen to music, do you mainly focus on the "melody" or the "lyrics"?
In recent years, I’ve transitioned from being a "melody-focused" listener to a "lyrics-focused" listener.
I'm a lazy person. In the past, I didn’t really care about what I listened to. My way of listening to music was like turning on a radio show—whatever it played, I would listen to. As long as the melody wasn't unpleasant, I’d stick with it and not change the station. I might have heard many songs, but I never paid attention to the song titles or what the lyrics were about. (First, let me apologize to all the singers out there.)
Music was like another form of background music in my world.
Gradually, as I discovered my love for languages, my ears became more discerning. When I was younger and determined to learn English, I often read online that listening to music and watching American TV shows would improve my English quickly. It was around that time that I started to notice the significance of lyrics. I began printing out the lyrics of my favorite English songs, highlighting and annotating them with eight different colored pens, breaking down each sentence structure, part of speech, and unfamiliar words, among other things.
This small habit, practiced over many years, has been incredibly helpful for language learners. Now that I'm learning Spanish, I can't help but want to know what the songs are singing about when I listen to Spanish music! Not only that, but Mexicans, much like people in Taiwan, love singing karaoke. If you go to karaoke with friends and don’t know these Spanish songs, how could you possibly connect with them?
So now, let me introduce you to the first Spanish song I learned. It’s a very cute and upbeat song that one of my students recommended to me during my first month in Mexico.
He said, "You absolutely have to learn "Limon Y Sal' by Julieta Venegas!"
